Buckingham Palace recently released a captivating portrait featuring the King and Queen alongside the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Edinburgh. The photograph was taken during Royal Week in Scotland and showcases the foursome in their elegant attire following the Thistle Service at St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh.

In the portrait, Charles (75), Camilla (76), Prince William (42), and Prince Edward (60) are seen wearing the green Mantle of the Order of the Thistle velvet robes. Their white-plumed hats and glistening insignia, including the Thistle Stars, add to the regal splendor of the occasion.

Curious Observations

While many royal enthusiasts praised the photograph as “beautiful,” some social media followers raised questions. Specifically, they wondered why the Duchess of Edinburgh (Sophie) was not included in the picture despite attending the service. The answer lies in the fact that Sophie is not a Lady of the Thistle—the highest honor in Scotland. However, there’s hope that she may receive this prestigious honor in the future, as they are personally bestowed by the King.

Princess Anne did not travel up to Scotland from the service, as she is still recovering from concussion following her recent accident.

The Princess of Wales was also absent amid her ongoing cancer treatment.

The Order of the Thistle

The Order of the Thistle has a total of 16 knights and ladies. In addition to the King and Queen, the Princess Royal and the Duke of Rothesay (the Prince of Wales in Scotland) hold the title of Royal Knights of the Thistle. Princess Anne, unfortunately, couldn’t attend due to her ongoing recovery from a concussion sustained in a recent accident. Similarly, the Princess of Wales (Kate Middleton) was absent due to her cancer treatment.

Special Honors for Queen Camilla and Prince Edward

The distinction of becoming a Thistle Knight or Lady is reserved for those who hold public office or significantly contribute to national life. Queen Camilla received this honor in June 2023. Her patronage of Maggie’s Cancer Care Centres, as well as her involvement with various Scottish charities, underscores her commitment to the community. Meanwhile, Prince Edward’s patronages of Scottish charitable organizations, including the Edinburgh International Festival, have earned him this special recognition.
