On Wednesday’s edition of the ABC talk show, Hostin divided opinion by discussing the ‘privileges’ that Clark – who broke numerous records in her historic college basketball career with – has enjoyed amid her staggering rise to fame.

‘I do think that there is a thing called pretty privilege,’ the lawyer and journalist said. ‘There is a thing called White privilege. There is a thing called tall privilege, and we have to acknowledge that.’
‘And so part of it is about race because if you think about the Brittney Griners of the world, why did she have to go to play in Russia? Because they wouldn’t pay her,’ she said of the .
Hostin’s take on the Fever rookie has sparked controversy, with Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy taking issue with her comments this week.

Barstool Sports chief Dave Portnoy has defended Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark
Clark has faced criticism amid her meteoric rise to stardom as the No. 1 pick in the WNBA Draft
On X, Portnoy quoted a Mail Sport story on Hostin’s comments and wrote: ‘Somebody tell this racist all these players are superstars and white and nobody cared till Caitlin Clark. It’s the way she plays.’
He then listed out the players in question: ‘Dianna Turassi – Paige Buckets – Cameron Brink – Sue Bird – Ella Del Donne – Breanna Stewart – Sabrina Ionescu – Kelsey Plum’ – Clark

Despite going 0-5 in her Fever career, the 22-year-old is already putting more bums on seats in the WNBA, with last weekend’s defeat to the New York Liberty bringing in a record $2million in ticket revenue.
Hostin’s comments about Clark sprung from the panel stating that her fame is a byproduct of her race and sexuality. While agreeing to the core of the argument, Hostin said that she has no issues with Clark bringing eyes to the league.
Sunny Hostin says Caitlin Clark benefits from ‘pretty privilege’
The Barstool founder labeled The View’s Sunny Hostin a ‘racist’ following her comments
Sunny Hostin insisted that Caitlin Clark’s popularity comes from ‘pretty and white privilege’
Jemele Hill previously argued that Clark’s popularity is a byproduct of her race and sexuality
‘Now, Caitlin Clark is bringing this money, these sponsorships, we hope, into the league, and other players will benefit from it,’ Hostin said. ‘But I do think that she is more relatable to more people because she’s White, because she’s attractive, and unfortunately, there still is that stigma against the LGBTQ+ community.’
‘Seventy percent of the WNBA is black. A third of the players are in the LGBTQ+ community, and we have to do something about that stigma in this country. I think people have a problem with basketball-playing women that are lesbians. Who cares? They are great athletes.’
Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin responded by saying she became a fan of the WNBA because Clark is ‘so fun to watch’ – noting that it had nothing to .
While co-host Whoopi Goldberg argued that she and Hostin have been trying to advocate for the WNBA for years, the former also pushed back on Hill’s comments.
‘To have her reduced that way bothered me a lot because this is her record,’ Goldberg said, pointing to her note card.

Caitlin Clark throws great passes, and she has been doing so throughout her rookie campaign.
Unfortunately, her teammates have a hard time catching the ball, which has led to a ton of turnovers for Clark that are not her fault at all.
On Sunday, Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever played Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky for the third time this year. The first two games were in Indiana, so the venue was finally changed to Wintrust Arena for the third time around.
When casual fans think of Caitlin Clark, they think of her Stephen Curry-like range. However, she also has playmaking skills like LeBron James, with her ability to see plays ahead of time and get the ball in the correct spot.
The former Iowa Hawkeye stepped up her passing game in a record-setting performance against the Chicago Sky, but her teammates have been unable to finish wide-open shots or even catch the ball.
Just in the first half, there were four plays where Clark put the ball where it needed to be, but her teammates made an unforced error.
Caitlin Clark Sets Franchise Assists Record During Loss Against Chicago Sky
Both Angel Reese and Caitlin Clark had special performances in Sunday’s matchup between the Chicago Sky and Indiana Fever.
Clark had the best passing game of her young WNBA career.
Clark set an Indiana Fever franchise record for assists in a single game as she ended the day with 17 points, 13 assists, and six rebounds, per IndyStar.com.
For Reese, she became the first WNBA rookie to record a 25-point, 15-rebound double-double since A’ja Wilson did it back in 2018.

On Tuesday, the Indiana Fever announced that they have waived rookie guard Celeste Taylor and activated veteran Damiris Dantas. The move comes just five days after Taylor celebrated her 23rd birthday, another reminder of how tough the professional sports business can be.
Indiana drafted Taylor with the No. 15 selection in April, 14 spots after selecting generational talent Caitlin Clak with the first overall pick. In five game appearances with the Fever, Taylor averaged 0.6 points and 0.2 rebounds per game.
Dantas signed a two-year deal with Indiana in February after playing in Minnesota from 2019 to 2023. Dantas, who spent her first two years with Minnesota (2014 to 2015) also played for Atlanta from 2015 to 2017.

Taylor was a star player in college for Texas, Duke and Ohio State. The Queens, New York native was renowned for her defense, winning 2023 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and 2024 Big Ten Conference Women’s Basketball Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Dantas joins an Indiana Fever team that sits 7-11, having won six of their last 10 games. She has averaged 7.7 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game in her career while shooting 34.1 percent from downtown.
Indiana Fever Are Right Back In The Playoff Race
After an ugly 1-8 start to the season, Caitlin Clark and the Fever have quickly turned a corner and find themselves in the thick of the WNBA postseason race.
They are just half a game behind the Chicago Sky and Atlanta Dream (both 6-9) for the final two playoff spots in the standings, and two games behind the Phoenix Mercury (8-8) for the No. 6 seed.
Thursday’s contest with Seattle is the third of a five-game road trip for Indiana, who will conclude the trek against Las Vegas next Tuesday.
